The game is one of the NES' early adventure titles, and had the player guiding Samus through simplistic-looking caves and caverns, blasting alien critters and uncovering ancient artifacts to upgrade her powersuit. The levels were huge, and coupled with the NES' unreliable palette shifting, resulting in rooms being a different color to when you were last there, things quickly become extremely confusing. To make things worse, the game provided no map! So to have any kind of clue as to what to do next, players would be encouraged to draw up their own maps of each region of Zebes.
Legacy...
Metroid has actually been released quite a few times since Metroid Prime revived the series. You can get hold of the game by linking up your completed copies of Metroid Fusion to Metroid Prime, purchase the GBA NES Classic version of the game, or just pick up the GBA remake, Metroid: Zero Mission, which includes the original game as an unlockable. I couldn't really recommend plopping down 500 points on what could be picked up with far more content elsewhere. Go get Zero Mission instead!Reader Reviews
For its time, Metroid was leaps and bounds ahead of almost all other games in many ways.
