ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron
Reader Rating:

Toe Jam and Earl 2 is a pretty radical departure from the original game. Whereas the first Toe Jam game sported an overhead camera, and had you guiding the two characters independently to find parts of their smashed space ship, this game is a fully fledged side-scrolling platformer. Players guide either Toe Jam or Earl (or both, with two-player cooperative mode), and explore the very alien world of Funkotron. Gameplay is based around capturing the various earthlings rampaging around the world. From mischievous kids, to insane construction workers, to crazy naked men standing in a box and singing. There's quite a bit of variety, and they all have their own unique way of being a pain in the butt to you.
Earthlings are captured by throwing magic jars at them. They each take a varying number of jars before they succumb and become trapped. Once all earthlings in a given area have been captured, you haul them off to the rocket pad and send them back to Earth, and head off to a new area of Funkotron to begin the process over again.
Presentation-wise, the game is one of the best you'll see on the Genesis. Graphics are fantastic, and character sprites are detailed and well-animated, and the world of Funkotron is awesome in its stereotypical depiction of an alien land. The game also boasts some great music to funk you up while you're throwing jars at people.
