Ghouls n' Ghosts is probably one of the most fun and most difficult sidescrollers for the SNES. You play as a knight, who has to rescue a princess. You're equipped with (a) lance(s) and armour and you have to go through hordes of enemies such as zombies and wolves. The game is a bit like a medival Mega Man, which isn't a surprise since the same company (Capcom) developed the game.
It's definitely more difficult though, and you'll probably die many times before you get to a new level. It's not a frustrating challenge though, and you'll be addicted to trying to proceed further in the game. Along the way you also get several other weapons and armour upgrades to help you along the way. But no matter how many armour upgrades you get, 2 hits from anything will kill you, so you still have to be careful.
I highly recommend the game and think everyone should get a chance to love it.
