Gareth Trinkwon Streets of Rage

One of the early examples of the side-scrolling beat-em-up genre. Streets of Rage was SEGA's answer to the Final Fight titles on Nintendo's system. It tells the story of three cops: Adam Hunter, Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding, as they become sick of the crime and corruption that has polluted their city. It's time to take it to the streets (of rage) and crack some skulls!

The game is based around marching through thug-infested streets, showing them who's boss, and then moving on. Each stage will be accompanied by a 'boss' enemy at the end, which is usually just a taller, scarier and stronger thug. The game itself is about as basic as the side-scrolling beat-em-ups get. The controls are pretty much limited to attack, jump and special. Repeatedly pressing attack will chain punches and kicks with a brief combo, and you can perform a drop kick by attacking while jumping, but that's all you've got. You can also grab enemies by walking into them, which gives you the chance to pull off some close-quarter punching, kicking or throws for extra damage.

The special attack calls for reinforcements and has a patrol car skid over and fire a mortar of gunfire to vanquish all enemies in the area. The later games dropped this in exchange for super powerful attack moves for each character.

Legacy...

The game was originally released in 1990, and saw ports on SEGA's other systems around that time: The Game Gear, Master System and SEGA CD. Since then the series has pretty much laid dormant, and Virtual Console is the first rerelease in years. Might be worth picking up for nostalgia, but if you're looking for a good gaming experience, I'd suggest checking out the two sequels.
