Gunstar Heroes
Reader Rating:

This game features a wide variety of levels that range from underground mines to an enemy-created board game. The bosses are also unique and offer an overall challenging game experience. Four different weapon types are available and the player can also combine two of the four to create even more powerful and interesting weapons. In addition to these weapons, the player can also use melee attacks and throw enemies that get too close.
Not only is Gunstar Heroes a fun action game, but it is also a very humorous game that takes many opportunities to poke fun at the enemies and bosses.
Legacy...
North American gamers first got a taste of Gunstar Heroes in September of 1993 when it was released for the Sega Genesis. A port for the Sega Game Gear was released in Japan in March of 1994. Gunstar Heroes was also included in the Japanese compilation Sega Ages: Treasure Box which became available in February of 2006. North Americans enjoyed some semblence of a successor in Guardian Heroes (Sega Saturn, 1996) and Advanced Guardian Heroes (GameBoy Advance, 2004) which alluded to Gunstar Heroes in many ways, but the real sequel was Gunstar Super Heroes (GameBoy Advance, 2005). It was not until the 11th of December, 2006 before the original game would be released yet again on Nintendo's Virtual Console.Reader Reviews
Shooters don't really get more frantic than this one. There's always an enemy to grab/shoot/slide into from all directions. Absolutely nuts, which makes it awesome. The levels are laid out pretty neat, and while the enemies may get a little bit repetative after a while, the amazing boss fights always seem to spring out of no where and make a nice change of pace.
Co-op also adds a lot to this game. Probably the most fun multi-player oriented game on the VC. Being able to throw your friend is pretty funny too. Weapons are also pretty varied. You only get 4 basic types of guns to choose from, but later in the levels you can mix guns together to make new ones. I'm pretty sure there's 16 or so different types of guns you can use. Anyway, it's brainless and fun. Get it.

One of my first VC games and also one of my best VC purchases. It's just so much fun, and has a pretty good replay value. I love throwing around the other player in co-op as well. My only complaint is that it seems a little too kid friendly for a game of this type. But I'm not really a person who cares about that.
