Donkey Kong Jr.

Interestingly, Nintendo decided to change the theme from man vs. animal to animal vs. man for the sequel to Donkey Kong. After getting his face smashed in with barrels while jumping up a rickety building to save his girlfriend, Mario has taken it upon himself to imprison Donkey Kong, much to the chagrin of DK's own stubby pride and joy. Mario, in some sort of animal abuse fervor, drags DK away from his family, unleashing enemies like Snapjaws (deadly biting ... creatures) and trained murderous attack birds to essentially tear DK Jr. to shreds. Where's the ASPCA when you need it?
What was a great about this game was the fast, challenging platforming that made its predecessor so grand. The whole game consisted of four major stages that took you from vine jumping to springboarding to chain sliding to confronting Mario himself in his ape-abuse hideout. When playing, DK Jr. can move faster by gripping two vines at once but is faster sliding down the vine when gripping only one. Jumping plays a big part in the game as well, but a miscalculated jump will either land you in the water below or in the jaws of said vicious animals.
Almost as popular as the original, Donkey Kong Jr. still lives in the hearts of old-school arcade lovers everywhere, but the game definitely shows its age. Every level is predictable with enemies and fruit (which you use to drop on the heads of unlucky enemies) shows up in the same places every time. Can you handle taking DK Jr. through four level-types over and over with rising difficulty for long periods of time? Then you're an 80's arcade lover and this game is certainly for you.
