What We Say
Dig Dug: Digging Strike combines the concepts from Dig Dug and Dig Dug II into one new Nintendo DS game. The top screen shows an overhead view, much like Dig Dug II, and the bottom screen shows the action in classic Dig Dug fashion.
The plot stars the Dig Dugger himself, Hori Taizou. Taizou gets a phone call asking for help in clearing beasts out of the land. The call was actually meant for his son (Hori Susumu, star of Mr. Driller), but Taizou thinks he still has some hero left in him, and heads off to save the day!
You control Taizou as you dig your way underground, defeating enemies and collecting food (yes, underground food). If you let the enemies grab the food, they begin to float up towards the surface. Once reaching the surface, they are eaten by a boss character. This makes the boss evolve into a more fearsome form. So it is in your best interest to kill the enemies swiftly.
There are some new weapons and items that have been thrown into the mix as well. Underground there are magnets, bombs, and boxing gloves used for killing enemies. There are also parts laying around that you collect to build up new weapons. Once you complete the weapon and finish the stage, you spin a roulette to see if you get to use it in the next level. There are over ten weapons in all, giving you faster, more powerful drilling capabilities and longer drill reach.
As for the bosses, you need some help there! once Taizou collects special power ups, you switch to Susumu on he surface who is in a special vehicle. The boss battles play out like the action in Dig Dug II, where you create cracks in the island, eventually causing it to collapse.
In addition to Taizou and Susumu, other characters that make an appearance in the game are of course the classic enemies as well as Hori Ataru, Taizo's eldest son. Hori Ataru is your opponent in versus mode. In versus mode, two players compete to collect coins. While of course keeping your opponent from getting coins.
