Unhappy A bad week for gaming

Well, I picked up Space Channel 5 (DC) at Circuit City just before Christmas. I played a bit that night; it froze up and I turned it off without worrying too much. The next time I turned it on, it wouldn't start up. "Crap", I thought, "the disc must be damaged. I tried Shenmue, nope; VF, nope; finally a CD. The drive/laser assembly must have worn out.

Question: Anyone know where to get these, or should I just get a new DC?

So I got out my PSX and set it up. I played a CD, nothing odd going on. I put in Castlevania Chronicles two hours ago, and it gave me a funny error: no memory card in slot 1. "Oh hell," I say. Sure enough, the card is dead and all my legacy game saves (including my Jet Moto records, several CV: SotN saves, the Chronicles save, Super Puzzle Fighter 2, Bushido Blade, etc. etc. etc.) is gone.

Question: Is there any chance of recovering the data, say via one of those PC-based backup devices? Will a PS2 one work with PS1 memory cards?

And my Sega Nomad (portable Genesis, if you missed it) has gone from bad to worse, only booting to the game once every 25 times or so. Can't say I'm surprised there.

I'd appreciate any help with those questions. My Dreamcast is dead, my PSX is probably too dangerous to play, and most of my best data is gone. At least I still have my Gamecube, heh.

I can't really help, but I can sympathize. My N64 doesn't read my cartridges anymore, so I can no longer play any of my games on it. My Xbox has the unfortunate Thomson Drive, and the only games I have that don't freeze after 10 minutes of play are Ninja Gaiden, and Beyond Good and Evil. I don't have a gamecube but my DS keeps me company.

OUCH.

I feel your pain. Sorry, but I'm of no help here, all I've ever done is send my old SNES to repair because my dad dropped it from a meter high. And I need to fix my NES, which suffers from the usual.

your memory on the memory card is gone...by by. But if you play ps1 games on ps2, check browser screen and check out the mem card.

Hey man, sorry to hear about your streak of bad luck. Luckily, I've had a similar (or not so similar) problem with my Dreamcast, so I can offer the little advice I know.

First off, there are several problems that most Dreamcasts go through, and by way you've described your problem in your post, it seems that your Dreamcast has basically stopped spinning the disc/was used so much the laser has become uncalibrated. If you're willing to shell out a few bucks for a new Dreamcast, then you should at least try this little trick first. http://sysopaim.cjb.net/ has a really good guide to recalibrate your Dreamcast's laser. Be extremely careful and follow all the instructions VERY carefully.

(When I had this problem, I got impatient and turned the little screw (aka potometer) way too much, which made my Dreamcast work. A few days later, the drive went crazy and would spin the discs so fast that I couldn't even open up my Dreamcast.)

I can relate to the Nomad, my battery charger is pretty much toast(its not the pack, something in the nomad), so a full charge is lasting 10min MAX on my busted Nomad

And my PS1(modded ), the thing that holds the CD's in place is totally busted. CD''s flip flop and fall out, so its gone. I've tried taking one out of a freind's old PS1, but the middle, is glued in, so when prying it off, it broke the sides, and 2 ball berings(sp?) fell out when doing it(but I can replace the balss, but there an akward size). I got it to run, it laoded a game(laser is fine), but you need alot of patience and videos usually freak out, and it sounds like a lawnmower.

10 minutes is good for a Sega handheld.

Does anyone still have that video of fanboys totally destroying a Gamecube (Throw it out of a car, drive around normal and rocky, dusty roads with it dragging it by a rope attached to the handle, etc) and then it still works?

I'd like to have it! Of course, I would give a cookie...

( )Ontopic: Sounds like a bad week! Good luck with fixing that Dreamcast.

edit:
Original link to video, not working now

edit2: Found it! This kind of stuff makes me a fanboy

My suggestion: Only play Nintendo consoles.

SEGA

I got Typing of the Dead in the mail yesterday, see, so I had to give it a try.

Got my Saturn, too, so the poor DC is going into storage for a little while

Maxwell, did you take wing70301's advice or did you fix it yourself?

If you have the problem again, try playing with the Dreamcast upside down. This will recalibrate the laser sometimes. After a play session or two you can turn it back over.

I actually took the Dreamcast apart and had it "in the position" to adjust the potentiometer, but decided to test it just so I'd have a baseline for its behavior. Chu Chu Rocket spun up as normal, though, so I reassembled the case, plugged it into the TV, and voila!

Things often seem to work like that. I had a bizarre blank-screen problem with my Vectrex -- involving the video circuitry but I'm not sure how -- that not playing it for six months fixed :/

Up, down, right, right, shoot, shoot, shoot!
This has reminded me to play Space Channel 5 again.
