Should I buy a PS2?
Yes, I'm seriously considering purchasing a PS2 with my xmas money this year. Although I have many questions to ask before I do so, and I'd like your opinions. 1st, my list of wanted games (some higher than others obv, Wanda and Katamari are at the top pretty much), keep in mind I only compiled this list from a small casual search of gamespot.
Ico
Wanda and the Colossus 2005
Katamari Damacy
Katamari Damacy 2 2005
Rez
Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty
Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater
Dragonball Z Budokai 3
Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2005
Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner 2 2005
Tales of Rebirth 2005
Disgaea Hour of Darkness
Dragonquest VIII 2005
Phantom Brave
Growlanser Generations
Okami 2005
I would like your opinions upon these games. I have yet to actually play a Metal Gear game, but the series looks intriguing, and I was afraid before that I would play Twin Snakes, get hooked, and force myself to buy a PS2. I can already tell its a great series. As you can see from this list, I love RPGs, and the cube gets almost none, but what to add? I've never played a FF game before, although its not as though they have much in common with eachother, its just square enix doing what they do best. And I'm afraid that if I buy so many RPGs, I'll get myself burned out on them.
I would really appreciate your list of good PS2 games. Now before you waste your time listing some things, I'll tell you now that I don't want things like Jak or Ratchet, I don't care for sports games period, I'm generally not a fan of fighters (2d or 3d) but I can be open minded.
And whats the difference between the new thinner lighter PS2, and the older larger PS2 besides just the price? Is the new one worth the $50 more? Are there any sort of bundles out that you would recommend?
I really know nothing about the memory cards for the PS2. 1st, how much does the average game use on the average memory card? How much memory do larger games like Disgaea use? Are there 1st party memory cards (I really hope so)? What other info should I have about the PS2 cards, I've only been introduced to the cube so far.
How often do PS2s break down? Are disc read errors a constant annoyance?
Anything else I should know? And I really appreciate any help I can get, I'll give cookies to everyone who actually helps out.

Nah, why not wait for the PS3 if you're interested in those games. Whats another year, and an extra $100 bucks, really?

Nah, I'm not going to wait another year. And can anyone suggest any PS1 games? I'll likely look for a copy of FF7.

Of course you should buy a PS2. It's got the most diverse library out of all of the home consoles, and it also plays the gigantic and stellar PSX library as well.
If those aren't good reasons, Katamari Damacy is the best one I can come up with. Oh, and Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil.
PSX game suggestions:
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Castlevania Chronicles
Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions
Silent Hill
Klonoa: Door to Phantomile
Suikoden
Suikoden II
Final Fantasy Chronicles (Final Fantasy IV + Chrono Trigger)
Final Fantasy Anthology (Final Fantasy V + Final Fantasy VI)
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy Tactics
Chrono Cross
Xenogears
Tales of Destiny
Tales of Destiny 2
Breath of Fire III
Breath of Fire IV
Persona
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
To name a few.

yes get a ps2, if only for ico
ico is seriously like my favorite ps2 game. i like it so much.
previous poster mentioned klonoa 2. that game is also great, but a bit on the easy side.
you cant go wrong with final fantasy x or x-2 if you like rpgs.
jak and sly are probably the best platformers.
arc the lad twilight of the spirits is fantastic, and im sure it's pretty cheap these days.
wild arms 3 is another great one. and a remake of wild arms 1 is coming out eventually too!
ps2 #1

Yes you should get one if you want those games. Don't let the fanboys stop you from getting a great system with great games. Like fudge said, it's worth it for Ico. Plus there are so many great games that are only on PS2.

rez and ico are overrated by the pretentious lot(and rez was better on dreamcast). but a ps2 is well worth getting just dont get the slimline model they're cheaply made, the design is appualing and tacky, not enough heating so many break within 30 minutes, laser is way too hot and a recall is due in a few weeks apparently

Really? So I should go for the older model? Thanks for the info.
And I'd like some info on the memory cards.

I couldn't disagree with you more. Rez and ICO are great, and there is nothing wrong with the slimline model. In fact, it loads games much faster and works just fine.
I've heard absolutely nothing of a recall, and do not believe it for a moment.

Ok, if you play PlayStation games on Ps2, the only way to save it is on a Ps1 memory card....
Ps1 Card- only with Ps1 games, but playable on Ps2
Ps2 cards- Only with Ps2 games
*Also- I got a Ps2 memory card for 18 dollars, and a Ps1 for 10

Either post sources or stick that load of sh*t back up your ass.
Also both Rez and Ico are great games. And Suikoden 3 is also great. I say go for the slim "PSTwo", it is sexy, and who cares if you can't use the HDD on it, FFXI sucks anyways (I hate FFXI so much, biggest waste of money ever and I had the PC version).

i never played rez
but from what ive seen of it, it doesnt look like my type of game
and i dont know if it's been mentioned or not, but the slim ps2 doesnt support the hard drive. EDIT: OOPS IT HAS BEEN MY BAD! so if you want to play any games that use the HD (i think resident evil outbreak and ffxi are the only ones at the momente...) then just get the normal ps2.
ive had my ps2 for a few years now, and it's working just like the day i got it.

Resident Evil Outbreak supports the HDD but doesn't require it, same goes for Socom 2. FFXI is the only game that requires it.

Resident Evil Outbreak sucks, too, so no one has to worry about it!

I'd say a Playstation 2 is worth it just for the sole reason of playing past Spyro the Dragon games, without a doubt some of the best platforming games ever.
I'm going to be honest, PS2 is probably my least favorite of the three, but it has some of the best titles for each genre out there so it should definetly get a look at.

You will not get burnt out trust me. I have a backlog of games but I always make time for my RPG's and I have a GIGANTIC PS2 collection of games.
I would really appreciate your list of good PS2 games. Now before you waste your time listing some things, I'll tell you now that I don't want things like Jak or Ratchet, I don't care for sports games period, I'm generally not a fan of fighters (2d or 3d) but I can be open minded.
Here is a list of GOOD games I think are worth a purchase
Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War
Ape Escape 2
Champions of Norrath
Chaos Legion
Dark Cloud 2
Devil May Cry
Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
Final Fantasy Anthology,Chronicles,Origin,Tactics,7,8,9,10,10-2
Front Mission 4
Gradius V
Growlanser Generations
Ico
La Pucelle tactics
Phantom Brave
Maximo vs. Army of Zin
Maximo: Ghosts to Glory
Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Onimusha 1,2,3
Shadow Hearts: Covenant
Silent Hill 2,3,4
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time
Suikoden III
Suikoden IV
Wild Arms 3
Xenosaga 1
Chrono Cross
Legend of Mana
Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment
Star Ocean 2
Threads of Fate
Thousand Arms
Vagrant Story
Valkyrie Profile
Vandal Hearts 2
Xenogears
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
there are more but you get my drift lol
And whats the difference between the new thinner lighter PS2, and the older larger PS2 besides just the price? Is the new one worth the $50 more? Are there any sort of bundles out that you would recommend?
the new one is smaller and much faster at loading and from what I know both the regular and the new slim one are the same price at 150. I also dont know of any bundles but you can check gamestop and ebgames.com
You most likely will only need one memory card and most games dont take much memory. the only games that take MASSIVE memory are the games you dont like(sports games) so you should worry about filling up your memory card anytime soon. There are other type of memory cards but I'd go with the regular memory cards. If you get psone games you will need a psone memory card and most games take like 1 friggin memory on a card that prolly holds like a couple hundred so you are in good shape.
How often do PS2s break down? Are disc read errors a constant annoyance?
its weird for some people it all comes down to how you take care of your ps2. if you take care of it it will last you a very long time.
Anything else I should know? And I really appreciate any help I can get, I'll give cookies to everyone who actually helps out.
nothing else you really need to know but all I can say if you decide to get one hit me up whenever you like about games etc... I'm sure I can help you with alot if needed.
