Does everyone hate Jack Johnson as much as I do?
Jack Johnson has always been one of those musicians that fit in my category of pretty much just off the radar. Like Dave Matthews, where every once in awhile I wonder why the whole damn planet seems to love him but I don't care enough to spend much time on the idea. This changed when Daisy got heavily into maximizing her iTunes library, and apparently downloaded his entire discography. And the Instant Karma album (a mish-mash of musicians covering Lennon songs and donating the proceeds to Darfur, which yeah kind of makes Daisy an asshole).
As far as the album goes, it's predictably hit-or-miss, but it's interesting to see how different artists approach the project. Christina Aguilera does a pretty straight cover of Mother, but puts her voice to use, which is probably the only thing she could add to a Lennon song. REM makes #9 Dream sound like an REM song, which isn't very interesting but hey, good work. Green Day does a surprisingly good cover of Working Class Hero, building the low-key song into kind of a war march, and it's much better than what would come to mind if you thought "Green Day covering Lennon". So yeah, mixed bag. But this topic isn't about the album.
Johnson covers "Imagine", which is ironically unimaginative because it's not only Lennon's most popular solo song but also because Willy Nelson covers it on the same album. What's amazing is that he combines the weaknesses of every artist on the album without adding anything. It's pretty much a straight cover, strummed on his ukelele or whatever and sung in his Valium voice like he does all the time. This is when it hit me that I hate Jack Johnson.
Why doesn't this guy work in some bar making lame tips? All he does is slowly strum his strings and barely sing covers. Or boring original songs that might as well be covers. You can't even tell his songs apart. He's a hack. Someone please tell me I'm not insane.

I love a lot of his songs, but I'm not so desperate to hear him that I need to have curious george soundtrack and whatnot. I just neeed to be in the mood to listen.
Oh and you should totally buy that Darfur album. The label gets zero money off it because every cent goes to charity. Even radio doesn't get the album.

I just wrote a long, better argument on why lil' Wayne is a ++++ rapper. "Best rapper alive"? You know 89% of BET's viewers believe that horse ++++? People are worse than Sheep. At least sheep make coats and stuff.
I agree with you 100% Deacon. lil' Wayne sucks.
God Blessa!

He should have done "Women is the ++++++ of the world" Thats a good Lennon song.
I do like Johnson though just because its laid back, mellow and my pussy got me into him.

He's had a few really good radio hits, but I probably would never buy any of his albums. Being that it's quiet and all, I'd probably listen to it once, then never listen again.
Dave Matthews I can tolerate a little more.

I don't think I've ever heard Jack Johnson on the radio.
Personally, I don't think he's as bad as Jared makes him out to be. It's good chill out music, although every time I hear one of his song's I suddenly wish I was at a beach bonfire in Hawaii. I don't think he's the greatest singer, not even in my top ten, but Ben sent me a few of his things before and I liked having them around for background music, so I dled the rest. I'll probably end up deleting most if it since most of his songs do sount alike, but whatev. Jared's just cranky.

Johnson has some fantastic songs, though when his songs get old fast when trying to listen to his full CD's. That is, outside of Brushfire Fairytales, which was pretty awesome through and through.
If you play the guitar, you need to learn some Johnson stuff. It's such a freaking lady stealer, it's weird. Banana Pancakes? More like Banana Laid-Cakes!
But seriously, I like a lot of jack johnson music. Good stuff to dance to.
