IGN Reviews Mario Party 8 ...OR... Nintendo, please take this series away from Hudson
http://wii.ign.com/articles/792/792495p1.html
-------------------------------------
Closing Comments
Hudson and Nintendo really need to rethink the Mario Party formula, but will they? Not as long as these games keep selling, no. Discerning players will find this latest effort still has its moments, but also that they are fewer and farther between. The game includes a robust list of minis, boards and modes and yet you'll quickly discover that little else has been changed. All of our complaints about previous games – the slow pace, the lackluster single-player affair, the loose attention to detail – all remain and with Mario Party 8 we can add another criticism: ignorance of the Wii remote. True, there are a dozen or more minis that do utilize Nintendo's new controller in a unique and enjoyable way, but there are dozens more that don't – that, in fact, were obviously born on GameCube and later ported to Wii with last-minute new motion systems added in. This lackadaisical approach to the franchise sequel bleeds over into the presentation, which doesn't impress as a GCN effort, let alone a Wii one.
In spite of our issues with the game, people who loved Mario Party 7 will probably enjoy Mario Party 8, too, but we've chosen not to reward Nintendo with an undeserved high score for a copy/paste sequel.
6.0 Presentation
Dozens of new mini-games and a handful of new modes. You can incorporate your Miis into some games, but not all. Interface works, but the visuals are dated.
5.0 Graphics
The only Nintendo-published Wii game that doesn't really run in 16:9 widescreen mode, it's clear that Mario Party 8 was originally a GCN effort. The graphics don't even impress as a GCN title.
5.0 Sound
Some of the boards have catchy MIDI music, but character sound effects repeat often.
5.0 Gameplay
The formula is wearing thin. Some of the new minis use the Wii remote in unique and fun ways. Most don't. The single-player game is like torture.
8.0 Lasting Appeal
If you can overlook its shortcomings, Mario Party 8 offers a robust list of minis and modes to keep you busy and everything is better with friends.
5.2 Mediocre

Yahoo.com gave Mario Party 8 the front freakin' page. That's major exposure!

No question. Mario Party died for me after the second GCN effort.

When Nintendo Power gives you a 7.5 and you're pretty much a first party game, your know you're pretty bad.
Also, the series has always been by Hudson.

I didn't read the entire review, so if my comments seem stupid, I'll fix them after I read the review within the next half hour, but...
Mario Party has always been, and will always be Mario Party. Whether that's for better or for worse. And like was said, these games sell like mad. People love the Mario Party series, for whatever reason, and if I had to guess you can see why in the lasting appeal score. The games are still a blast when you have friends over. Factor in that how many people have a Wii who have NEVER played a Mario Party game before, and the gaming drought, Mario Party 8 will sell big, and I guarantee a Mario Party 9, also by Hudson. It's just the way it is.

Just retire Mario Party. The series is wore-out like a $2 ho now.

Each Mario Party release needs a distinct style. Look at the Sports games, they all have a style (at least, the art does). THe need to explore all kinds of different graphical presentations, and not just the same old thing.
That, and making games that feel fresh. And that use the Wii Remote. Maybe they should go and play Rayman Raving Rabbids for ideas.

I'd say a smart move would be to make each map explore a different Mario game as well as its art (ex: one world being all paper a la paper mario and the mini games are affected by this). If not, just get rid of the whole mario party series because it simply sucks.

I'll still enjoy playing it. If you buy a Mario Party game to play it by yourself, you're stupid. That said, each Mario Party entry has been enjoyed by my family. My parents even love playing so it really becomes an option when everybody is together.
Hopefully this one isn't distinctively worse than the previous ones. If it's more of the same, that's fine by me since I just use it for multiplayer family fun anyway.

The Mario Party games are fun for casual gamers as Deathdaddy points out but it really really needs an overhaul.

Well gamepro gave it a 4.5 out of 5, yahoo games gave it a 4 out of 5 and gametrailers a 8.3 out of 10.
It can't be that bad.
