Islamic spies to snoop on lovers

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - A Malaysian state plans to recruit "spies" from the public to snoop on unmarried lovers and report them to Islamic religious authorities, a newspaper said Tuesday.

The Terengganu state government plans to enlist the part-time spies to look out for un-Islamic behavior, such as unmarried couples kissing or holding hands, the Star daily said.

"Some of these 'spies' could be waitresses or even janitors at hotels acting as auxiliary undercover agents for our religious department," the head of the state government's Islamic and welfare committee, Rosol Wahid, was quoted as saying.

"Accurate details are required for the enforcement officers to act, otherwise they could be pouncing on married couples."

Last October, religious police in another part of this mainly Muslim country caused an outcry when they mistakenly raided the rented holiday apartment of a Christian American couple on suspicion that they were unmarried Muslims in "close proximity."

Anyway, as I alluded to, despite how oppressive this sounds like, it seems as if Muslim Malaysians are the ones being targeted. If that's the case, I'd say it's little different from the sort of inter-organization enforcement that occurs within other religious groups.

It's Malaysia. They banned Daredevil (the movie) for being too violent and having a shady secret society. There's no sanity there.

uh, the example he used involved muslims, yet he decided to smear all religions. oh and i think theres quite a difference between a federal "religion police" and some loony website. pathetic, really.

And I've provided an example of another religious group that are pretty nutty so I'd say it was a rather fair thing for him to say.

There's quite a few people who make up such websites. Plus, there's people like you. I wouldn't mind finishing our is-the-US-"secular"-argument.

This was never enforced under the completely Muslim ruled states after the time of the prophet, it's culture more than religion. In communities I've seen any obviously nonreligious people just wouldn't be invited to the dinners at the mosque.

In Islam everyone has a right to privacy and should know that they can't hide from God, this is wrong.

I'm not religious myself, but there is a point to it. A lot of religious people would argue that morals stem from them. I'm not saying its true, but you'll find that a lot of people get defensive about religion when its so flippantly dismissed as 'useless'.

There are crazy people in every religion that take things so far. You can pull up multiple examples like bin laden and Westboro. I am sorry I don't have examples of nutballs from all around the globe.
