Director Justin Lin Talks 'Oldboy' Remake
courtesy of bloody disgusting
If there's one movie that probably shouldn't be made, its Park Chan-wook's Oldboy- to me that's like remaking E.T. or Jurassic Park. But hell, it's going to happen, and Justin Lin is attached to helm the remake of the classic Korean film, now available on DVD from Tartan Extreme. Inside you'll find a portion of an interview with Lin, which details where they are in terms of remaking the flick. After being kidnapped and imprisoned for 15 years, Oh Dae-Su is released, only to find that he must find his captor in 5 days...
Portion from Suicide Girls interview:
DRE: I’ve heard a couple rumors of rumors about the Oldboy remake. That the main character will eat tacos instead of squid. Is that correct?
Justin: [laughs] We’re just playing around. We went from tacos to burritos but right now we’re so far away from it being a reality. I love that film and the only reason I wanted to explore that avenue is because it really spoke to me. I didn’t sign on to make a Xerox copy of the original because it’s a masterpiece. I wanted to explore other themes within it. If I was going to come close to making a Xerox I hope I have enough sense to stop that process. Oldboy is one of those projects where structurally it’s so solid and it brings up so many great themes that you could give it to ten different filmmakers and it would be interesting to see what comes out of each of them.
So far Universal has been very open to anything. I told them that I’m not signing on unless we’re not going to water down the ending. It has always been important to make sure that it’s understood up front what we’re trying to accomplish.
DRE: Is Nicolas Cage still attached?
Justin: We don’t have formal attachments. It’s a great movie and any actor in their right mind would want to be a part of it. I know he said publicly he’d be interested in it. I just don’t think we’re at that stage yet so hopefully after I wrap this movie I’ll have a little bit more time to play around and see what comes up.
they might as well remake every single movie ever created

UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
It'd be funny if Matt Damon was Oh Dae-Su.

I have some bad feelings about this. I can't see the last segments of the movie being left intact, they really wouldn't go down well with an American audience for several reasons. I just hope they don't make Dae-Su beat up all the bad guys at the end and stick in a happy ending

We watched another part of the vengence trilogy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengence, on Saturday with Tuff Ghost and it wasn't nearly as good as Oldboy. Lady Vengence looks pretty neat, but remaking Oldboy, which is already just a stellar film is just plain stupid.

They had a big viewing of it last semester here. I didn't find out until a few days after. I was pretty bummed.

I really can't get my head around Lin's decision to do the film. I'm guessing it has something to do with the critics who made him out to be the saviour of Asian-American culture following Better Luck Tomorrow, though based on what I've heard about Annapolis, maybe I misjudged him all along and he sucks.

I think you should also, taku, daisy and a couple others told me about it and how awesome it is. I went to best buy and bought it and I will forever listen to their opinions on movies I've never seen before cause Oldboy is AWESOME.
