More on Children of Mana

Children of Mana Update
We won't have to wait so long for the Mana revival after all.
by IGN Staff
October 5, 2005 - News of the first fruit from Square Enix's World of Mana project had both good and bad implications for DS owners. The good: the all-new Children of Mana was in development for the DS. The bad: Square Enix had listed the game with a Winter 2006 release, suggesting we'd have to wait over a year to play it!
It looks like the original release date was a mistake, as Square Enix has just updated its website with a new release date: this winter. That's right, Children of Mana will hit the Japanese DS some time between December and February of 2006, turning a year wait into a wait of just a few months (that's for the Japanese version, of course -- no word yet on the US version).
Aside from this more reasonable date, the latest issue of Famitsu offers a few details on Children of Mana. The game will feature multiplayer play, where different players will work together in order to achieve actions that are not possible in single player mode. You'll be able to, for instance, hit your partner characters to knock them over a fence. Division of labor is a big part in multiplayer play, which is itself one of the main focuses of the game.
The game seems to have a complex weapon system. You can equip multiple weapons to your character, with each weapon used differently. A barrel can be hit and launched at enemies while a sword is, of course, used to slash enemies. How you combine all your actions will determine how well you perform against your enemies.
Character modification is also a big part of the game, as you can equip multiple parameter-modifying items to your character simultaneously, changing your stats in the process. This type of modification system is being used in place of a more conventional job or race system so that when playing multiplayer, you'll be able to modify your character in order to differentiate yourself from your fellow players.
Famitsu also reveals that Square Enix will be using the stylus for the game. However the development staff doesn't want to use the stylus just for the stylus' sake, and will keep all the main action controlled via the D-pad and main face buttons.
With a Japanese release just a few months away, we expect more details to begin surfacing on Children of Mana shortly. Stay tuned to IGN for more in the near future.

Looks almost exactly like Secret of Mana.
And that's not a bad thing. I recently bought Sword of Mana, so I think that will hold me off before this one gets out.

Can't beleive my eyes. Nintendo is getting more support from Square Enix than a Sony system . This is the first time in a long time I have seen such support from them when a Sony console is on the market to challenge it.

Yeah, I thought the implication was the psp. Although with "system" in the first sentence, and "console" in the second, I can see the ambiguity.

Not to mention the DS is newer than the PS2?
And wasn't the DS outselling the PS2 the last time I checked? It makes perfect sense that this much support is showing from Square Enix toward Nintendo's bright, new handheld machine. Take a look around, not only Square Enix is giving the DS a lot of support. Who ever thought you'd see a Burnout game on a Nintendo handheld? Now all we need is some Rock Star support...

You're comparing the # of Square-Enix games released on a system thats been out for one year to the # of Square-Enix games released on a system over 5 years ago? A little unfair, no? I think a more reasonable comparison would be # of games in development for DS compared to # of games in development for PS2.

Even then it wouldn't that even, a PS2 is a genuine success, giving SquareEnix a bigger incentive to develop for that system. DS hasn't proved that yet.
(also one system is florishing and the other is dying)
