Hopefully, this won't make SOE hold back on a possible EverQuest PS3 mmorpg.
"UNTOLD LEGENDS GETS A NEW CHAPTER
Sequel to Sony-developed PSP RPG already in the works and PS3 version planned
15:28 A PSP sequel to Sony Online Entertainment's Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade is already in the works and plans are afoot to take the series to other platforms, according to reports.
As the only RPG available for Sony's handheld at its US launch Untold Legends has sold extremely well, topping some retailer's sales lists and coming third in NPD World's top ten best-selling US PSP games.
It's a top-down hack-and-slasher with extensive RPG elements. Players have to battle through over 100 dynamically created environments, ensuring the action is never the same twice. Four-player wireless cooperative play is also possible.
And after only three weeks on sale in North America Sony has already confirmed to US website GameDaily Biz that there are great plans for the future of the series.
"As I speak we are working on the development of Untold Legends II for the PSP in addition to other product strategies to bring the Untold Legends brand to other platforms," said Chris Sturr, brand manager for Sony Online Entertainment.
While Untold Legends hasn't received entirely complimentary reviews it seems its status as the sole RPG available for PSP has helped it sell well. Sturr reckons this was all part of SOE's gameplan: "Once we got the game concept from our development team we identified a key objective, which is to capitalize on the popularity and success of RPG titles early in the launch of a new hardware platform," he said.
Untold Legends, which will be distributed by Activision in Europe when the PSP finally launches over here, will also be transferred to other Sony platforms.
A PS2 version is likely and given the upcoming launch of PS3 we'd expect a next-gen version too - especially when you consider Sturr's comments about the success of RPG titles on new formats.
No gameplay details for the new Untold Legends games were discussed but you can get a better idea about how the current PSP version looks and plays here.
