Mushroom Kingdom History

co-developed by mubblymotts and myself
A lot of things in the Mario Universe are well known, and defined. One thing that gets to me though.... how did Peach become the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom (I don't remember if we've seen her father or not, I imagine he's the King).

One thing that also bothers me a bit is that the Mario games of late haven't had any level of epicism (or whatever the noun is for 'epic') to them. Super Mario Bros. had you travelling far and wide to revover the princess (somewhat epic for it's time, and genre). SUper Mario World had you defeating key bad guys, and you would get a fanfare and a story about each boss (again, somehat epic compared to later offerings), and SMW2 had Yoshi protecting Baby Mario at all costs (again, not that epic, but it's still pretty grand. Especially the final boss battle). Mario Sunshine (and 64, to a lesser extent) felt watered down in that sense, and didn't really captivate me from this point of view.

A really neat concept that could be explored is how the Mushroom Kingdom got the way it is. A game set in the pre-Peach era.

Chaos in Mushroom Land. The self appointed leader of the Mushroom people (maybe bowser?) didn't care about the land, or the people.... just the fortune and the power that the position got him. One Toad sets off on an adventure to end the chaos and bring harmony to the land.

Ultimately, He runs into girls named Peach and Daisy (unrelated friends) at a camp site. Their parents are sleeping in the tents, the girls are roasting marshmallows. Toad talks with them abdout his people's predictament, Daisy says something unintentionally rude while Peach says "thats awful". Peach leaves with Toad. In the final battle, Toad and his squad defeat the ruler of the land, and he appoints Peach (and her father) leaders of New Mushroom Kingdom, for their support. Daisy hugs peach goodbye, saying that her and her father are headed for Sarahasa Land for more adventure. (bowser is forced into a new realm to rule, and once he establishes himself there, then he tries to reconquer TMK... by kidnapping the princess, maybe)

As a sidequest/story, Peach rescues and old mushroom person from wrongfully being locked up in jail! he becomes her loyal servant to repay her for freeing him.

Perhaps, the day that their leader is dethroned is celebrated where everyone plays games together. This event gets renamed eventually after Mario because he keeps saving the princess. Hence Mario Party?

Of course, it wouldn't have to be completely serious. The gameplay can be nonlinear and platformy... but just have enough plot to show how some elements in the Mushroom kingdom came together. It would ultimately have a point, and be epic in it's own way. Some fanfare for the Mario Universe would be nice. not to the extent that Nintendo are leading people to think Zelda is going... but something with a bit of depth to it.

So yeah.... </post>

I didn't even really think about a Mario plot until a few days ago. Then it slipped my mind. So yeah...Mario can live without a plot. He's tight like that.

Of course he doesn't really need a plot. SMW2 was the first mario game to really try to tell a story. SMS had somewhat of a plot to it.

I think it would just be cool to give a bit of... something that adds to the mario universe in some way. Other than the layout of Peach's castle and that, on the planet, there is a dolphin-shaped island.

Paper Mario 1 & 2, Mario&Luigi, An Mario RPG have as much epic in them a lord of the rings...
