Rooms: The Main Building PREVIEW

Hudson Software is preparing to release a new title for the Nintendo Wii and DS titled Rooms: The Main Building.  While I'd heard very little on the game up until previewing it, I was immediately intrigued by the promise of a new puzzle game – one of my favorite genres.  While the preview copy of the Wii version didn't feature all of the modes and levels, there was more than enough there to whet my appetite for this quirky title.

Wii PREVIEW – Calling

Posted February 4th 2010 by Brandon Schmidt.

Calling preview

Survival horror games, by and large, have been an equal blend of shooter and scarefest.  Lately, though, the Wii has seen a few deviations in the genre with the release of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and the upcoming Calling.  These types of games retain an investigative element but have you react to conflict by running away rather than trying to put a shotgun blast through it.  I recently had a chance to play a demo build of the game that, while needing some polish, definitely had me curious to see where the story would go and the means by which the developers would attempt to creep me out.

Comics That Don't Suck #3

Posted February 2nd 2010 by Adam Glasgow.

Comics That Don't Suck #3Most comics blow. Without any kind of guidance, even thinking about finding a comic to read that doesn't suck is a little overwhelming. Lucky for you I'm here to make the process easier! Every so often I pop in these parts and point out some books that are easy to find and accessible to even the most casual comic book reader. And most importantly, you have my personal guarantee that these comics don't suck.

Our Favorite Games of 2009

Posted January 24th 2010 by Brandon Schmidt.

Best Games of 2009

With 2010 well upon us and our thoughts turned to what the year will bring, it's a good time to look back and reflect on the year that was. While the releases of a number of highly-anticipated titles being pushed back was a recurring theme, 2009 still brought us a lot of strong efforts from both big developers and small.

The N-Philes crew with all our quirks, likes, and personal biases would like to present to you our top three individual choices for game of the year  of 2009.  As varied as both our staff and all of you fans are, there's sure to be something in here we can all agree on, right? ....Right?

PREVIEW - ModNation Racers EU Beta

Posted January 21st 2010 by Will Davey.

ModNation Racers, for those of you that don't know, is essentially a modern take on kart racing. Sure you'll do a lot of racing around built-in tracks, but there's plenty of additions to the game that make it stand out. Not only are you able to create your own custom racers and karts, but you're also able to create your own tracks using the incredibly simple and intuitive track editor. Hopefully that'll be enough to keep the potential online community hooked, because without other players, ModNation Racers could end up quite shallow.

PREVIEW – Left 4 Dead 2

Posted October 31st 2009 by Jared Thomas.

Left 4 Dead 2 Preview

Happy Halloween, N-Philers!  I've put in some time with the early Left 4 Dead 2 demo for all good little girls and boys who reserve their video games, and I've got a spooktacularly long and tangential gob of impressions for you.  Plus, pics from Gareth's run through the demo!

Now, I needed no boner fluffing for the game's Nov. 17th release.  I've been on board since it was announced, but playing through the two stages of the Parish scenario has put aside any doubts I had that this game would swallow all my free time in 2010 and beyond.  By now, interested parties have had plenty of opportunity to find out what's in the game.  As far as how well new ideas are implemented, there's not much reason to worry.  In fact, the only reason I think people should even play the demo is because it's fun.  There shouldn't be much if any doubt that this is a game that deserves some attention this holiday season.

PREVIEW: DJ Hero

Posted October 19th 2009 by Frankie Aguilar.

So we've got another rhythm based game coming to us from the juggernaut in control of the Guitar Hero series. DJ Hero sets out to introduce gamers to a new genre of music and style of play. Since this game relies heavily on a type of music not part of the mainstream, and introduces a brand new peripheral, Activision is taking a big gamble, but from the brief time I've had with the demo version, this could be the next big thing in rhythm games.

DS PREVIEW - I Heart Geeks

Posted September 2nd 2009 by Adrian DeHerrera.

One of the coolest things about Wile E. Coyote is that not only is he an eternal optimist (seriously, how many times can you epically fail and keep coming back for more?), but he has a dedicated knack for making complicated contraptions to catch the roadrunner. A well placed arrow can hit a bullseye causing a match to light which ignites a rocket that explodes against a giant boulder, causing it to careen off a cliff – usually to the bone crushing tragedy of our brilliant but unlucky coyote friend. Although the results were always predictable, the coolness of the physics in the elaborate setups was undeniable. The basic premise of I Heart Geeks is similar to the elaborate setups constructed by Wile E. Coyote, with more real-life physics and a lot less Satan-approved roadrunners.
