Introducing Wi-Philes

In 2005 Nintendo began their first serious push for online gaming with the WiFi Connection, finally bringing their fans the worldwide connective gaming experience that other communities had enjoyed for years. Since then, Nintendo has bolstered their online presence with a slew of online-enabled DS games and the Wii's plethora of WiiConnect-24 features. Among them are Virtual Console downloads, Mii messaging, an AP news wire, an Opera Internet browser, and soon enough, worldwide online multiplayer. The sales figures, market standings, and impressive figures for the amount of WiFi connections made create a crystal-clear image of just how well online gaming has paid off for Nintendo so far. For the loyal fans, however, it's another story completely. Nintendo's online scene has been, at best, a stripped-down offering that pales in comparison to rival structures. Unfortunately, it fails to provide a truly immersive level of connectivity among gamers around the world.

N-Philes is doing its part to help fix this.

What we're able to offer here is a way to bridge the gap created by friend codes and the lack of communicative features that most Nintendo online games suffer from. The new Wi-Philes was built with community in mind – N-Philes' own community and the larger Nintendo gaming community. It's designed to give gamers across the world an easier time sharing friend codes, gathering people together to game, and communicating with their WiFi friends. Having fun and making friends, that's what it's all about, right?

What you can expect from Wi-Philes:

  • More robust profiles – Isn't "robust" an appealing word? That's why I use it here to describe the additions to the profiles that take it a step beyond just a name and a friend code. Express yourself with as many options as we could imagine anyone would want to share with Internet strangers. There's basic bio info, as well as a collection of your WiFi titles, your most-desired retro games to be put on VC, the best time to catch you on WFC, and even a personal blog! No longer exclusive to the N-Philes staff, blogs are now open for everyone with a Wi-Philes account to share their gaming experiences and thoughts with their friends and others.
  • Reader reviews – Why take one opinion when you can have an entire community's? Make yourself known by leaving a reader review on Nintendo titles and have your score added to the community average. There's no better way to recommend your favorite games or warn others about a dud.
  • Easy swapping of information – Just a send one of those "friend requests" that you kids are so crazy about, and you and your new pal will have total access to each other's friend codes. When a buddy adds a friend code for a new game, you're automatically notified as the code is added to your list.
  • Activity tracking between friends – Keep up-to-date when your Wi-Philes friends add a reader review, start a thread on the forums, or edit their Wi-Philes profile.
  • Event scheduling with customizable invites – Feel like inviting one friend to play online tomorrow? What about all your Wi-Philes friends? Or everyone on Wi-Philes? Send out invites and keep track of who's showing up to throw down at your event. Hop online at the right time or use the N-Philes Chat to meet up before the match.
  • Member searching by name or game – Add your forum buddies to your friends list, search for someone who gave you a great match on WiFi Connection, or just add as many friends as possible for your favorite game.
  • And let's not forget, a snazzy new look – Wi-Philes' stylish overhaul is courtesy of Kinopio, the same graphics designer who tailored our main page's Wii-inspired layout. When you are surfing Wi-Philes in a café or library, all the honeys will be like "damn, slickness". Especially if you are surfing from an Apple laptop.

We've put a lot of effort into making Wi-Philes as user-friendly and community driven as possible. We're dedicated to making this successful in the goal to make the Nintendo online experience as fun and seamless as possible, because hey, we're gamers, too. We want to see you in there, ready to throw down in a match of Mario Strikers Charged. We want to read your opinion on new VC titles that you either played on their original console or have recently downloaded. We even want your criticism; tell us new features you'd like to see implemented into Wi-Philes to make it an even better experience. We'll see what we can do. It's up to you, the readers, to add to this community we've created and make it something great for anyone around the world who wants to play WiFi games and make friends with other gamers.
