Off the Record, Vol. 4 - Resident Evil 4

Want to play as Krauser or give Ashley implants? Obviously.

Modifications to the character you control were very limited and restrictive. For example, after replacing Leon with Ashley, you are free to roam around as you please, but you cannot fight enemies since you have no items. There are plenty of other restraints, and they usually are welcomed with a nice little game freeze.

You can swap Ashley in place of Leon almost wherever you want in the game. However, as stated, you cannot fight since Ashley has no weapons. Sure, you can buy weapons from the merchant if you have cash, but the game doesn't allow Ashley to equip weapons. For example, when you select the Blacktail from the inventory and then select "Equip" the game gives you the proverbial "bzzzt" sound, meaning, "What the hell are you doing. Try again." Weak.

Modifying your character at different points in the game produces some interesting and hilarious match-ups. Ashley stands no chance against the last boss. After all, she is weaponless, right? Not exactly.

Fascinatingly, Ashley has a knife hidden under that skirt. Where she's been keeping it this whole time, we may never know. After crashing the construction material into the morbid Saddler, you can actually jump on top of the monster, pull out your dagger, and gouge the eye just as Leon did! It's pretty hilarious, actually. Not surprisingly, all the sound effects during this mini cut-scene are of Leon and not Ashley. Cool stuff indeed.

You can also modify Ashley's attire and characteristics. When I say characteristics, I mean body, and when I say body I mean chest, and when I say chest, I mean ... just look at the pictures already.

Switching Leon with Wesker had even more restrictions than with Ashley. As with Ashley, you cannot play as Wesker in all the locations of the game. In fact, you can hardly control him during the game at all. You also cannot open the inventory to check out what weapons you have or the game will freeze.

Shockingly, whenever you come across a cut scene that involves Leon, your character is replaced with nothingness. That's right, Leon becomes invisible. This next picture shows Leon near the end of the game throwing a knife to free a tied up Ada. All you can see is the knife!

Even more shocking though is what happens when a cut scene with Hunnigan takes place. To refresh your memory, these are the small scenes when Leon is talking over the transmission device.

When you play as Wesker and this scene takes place, your outgoing image is different! In the image, Wesker is clothed in a dark turtleneck and suit. His hair is also different from Leon's, being much shorter and darker. Is this the same hair we saw under the waterfall with Leon? Interestingly, this new image only occurs with Wesker and not with any other character modification. Perhaps this is because Wesker does have a "transmission" image that is seen later in the game? Maybe this is what Wesker looks like under those sunglasses of his, but other than the hair and clothes, both images look exactly the same. Are Leon and Wesker twins? Is Capcom hinting at something?

Sadly, the only other playable character that produced viable results was Krauser. This guy is a badass if you didn't know. He's got a bow and arrow and a rechargeable, mind-of-its-own arm-slicer, all of which are fully functional. As with the other characters, the game will freeze if you open your inventory or reach particular scenes in the game (like the one with Hunnigan, as Krauser has no image data for the game to produce). Leon is again replaced with nothingness during normal cut scenes.

With Krauser being such a badass and whatnot, do you think he might have a heart deep inside? Probably not. But someone shot this never before seen video which you are about to see. Krauser still denies it ever happened.

Changing the attire of some characters was also possible. Aside from the numerous outfits that Leon can wear throughout the game is a new (and ugly) one.

Check out that coat. Do you think Leon wears that get all the chicks? Probably not, because it looks like junk. The arm sleeves are taken from his outdoor jacket seen in the beginning of the game, and his shirt was probably taken from the bottom of your neighbor's trashcan. I think it would be safe to say that Leon should never be seen wearing this thing again.

This next character modification is incredibly weird to say the least. It may go down as the glitchiest, most sick and twisted thing in game history, actually. This mod removes Ada's skirt (no, that's not the sick and twisted part). Don't believe me? Take a look for yourself.

Notice Ada's hand carrying the gun (especially in the first picture). I believe I counted as many as four sets of five fingers surrounding that gun. Why this happens, probably nobody knows, but things get much weirder, worse, and whacked-out.

For some unique reason that only God himself could explain, whenever skirtless Ada is struck by a projectile (usually by those annoying arrow-shooting fools), the game goes bonkers. Absolutely bonkers. Non-stop explosion sound effects coupled by splashing water sound effects and numerous other, unexplainable noises blast through your speakers. And the sound is just the beginning.

Ada's body goes into a ballistic state of epileptic convulsions, morphing her body inside and out as she twists and turns like there's no tomorrow. "Sick" doesn't do justice to this hallucination. This is total body warpage. Samus Aran Ada is not. No morph ball for you. You have to see this to believe it. Why this happens simply cannot be explained. Ever.
