Question the Third!
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is currently still scheduled to appear exclusively for the Nintendo GameCube, and not Nintendo's next-generation console, codenamed the Revolution.
Is Nintendo making a blunder?

Is Nintendo making a blunder?

JORDAN
Yes. In May 2006, Twilight Princess will be reaching its third E3 as a GameCube title, and this isn't going to be your usual E3. It's one that'll feature huge unveilings of not only Nintendo's Revolution, but also of Sony's Playstation 3 and Xbox 360's next (or first for you cynics out there) big wave of titles. It's amazing to think that Nintendo's (mis)management of one of their most prolific franchises is going to bite them in the ass not just once, but twice in the same generation.
Look, I absolutely loved Wind Waker's cel-shaded atmosphere, but I'll be one of the first to admit it didn't help the game generate much hype. Sometimes I think the excellent pre-order deal did more to generate interest than the idea of a brand new Zelda game. And now Twilight Princess is looking more and more like it won't be shipping until the release of two more next-generation consoles. Is Nintendo really going to waste the immense hype surrounding the first "realistic" Zelda in forever, on a console that's dead in the water, getting its cute little handle ripped off by monstrous sea creatures? Let's hope not. Move Twilight Princess to a console that would actually benefit from having it.
CURTIS
Oh come on, Jordan! You have got to be kidding me! Nintendo's MIS-management? The only reason we didn't get a chance to rip into the world of Hyrule once again last holiday season was because Nintendo made a decision to make the game that much better. More dungeons, bigger levels, and better story; it's the whole package. Do you forget how upsetting it was to have Jabun's Pearl just GIVEN to you in Wind Waker? We all knew that Nintendo scrapped two entire dungeons just to have the game released in the . Sure it was nice to have the game early, but having it delayed six months to properly finish the game would have been better. The same is being done for Twilight Princess.
Not only that, but the game has, like you said, been in development for three E3's... who knows, perhaps even more. But during that whole development process, it's been designed to run on the GameCube, or more specifically, the GameCube controller, not the "Rev-Mote". So would you really prefer Nintendo to delay the game by perhaps another year or so, just to go to a different controller? Can you imagine playing a Zelda game with the Rev-Mote that wasn't made to use it? The game was built from the ground up to be played with the standard controller and Nintendo knows that.
Finally, you talk about the hype. Nintendo has a cult-like following, and I guarantee you that the second Reggie Fils-Aime walks out at E3 and announces that Zelda is being delayed for a couple of years to port it to the Revolution, he will be lynched. Nintendo has promised this title to GameCube owners time and again, so why would they abandon these users? It wouldn't be fair. Speaking of fair... have we all just suddenly forgotten that the Revolution is backwards compatible? Who says Nintendo can't ship the Revolution on the same day as Twilight Princess, or even bundle the two to sell more Revolutions. That way, people who don't own a GameCube but want a Revolution would buy the game (or get the game, depending on how you look at it), and users who aren't quite ready to make that next-generation jump can still play the one game they have been promised.
Agree or disagree, it's up to you who you felt had a stronger case against the cause. Within the next day, we'll be posting a thread on our forums for you to argue your point. We'd love to hear your feedback on our rationale, and to hear your own opinions of the discussion.
