Revolution: Now - Part 4

A Revolution is upon us.

Nintendo has officially built a house atop the highest mountain, and that mountain is named "potential." No controller has ever offered developers as much possibility, opportunity, and freedom as Nintendo's latest revelation, and all that stands between the success of the Big N's next system is the execution of its seemingly ingenious design. The map to innovation land has been printed, and game developers must create their own ways to the treasures – treasures that we gamers can share.

Following are examples of how developers can take full advantage of Nintendo Revolution's pointer controller, which can not only detect 3D space in all directions but also read any tilting and rotating of the device.

Visualize yourself...

... winning a 3-point contest in basketball. Form isn't everything, but aiming and timing are. Flick your wrist at the top of your jump shot and follow through directly to the rim. Before you swish another, don't forget to extend your arms at your side to grab another ball.

... going for the gold medal in fencing. Jab your hand forward to stab in front of you. Pull it toward you to take a step back. Blocking is crucial, so defend yourself with your sword using quick reflexes.

Pinpoint reflexes will help you become a fencing champ

... as a firefighter extinguishing flames inside a rickety cabin with your trusty hose. Wave the water back and forth to douse the blazing fire before the lodge collapses.

... bowling a perfect game. Twist your wrist as you follow through to put a nasty spin on the ball curving it through every pin.

... playing lacrosse. If you're holding the ball, every movement you make with your pointer is directly coordinated with your stick in the game. Flick your stick to pass the ball to a teammate. You'll even have to catch the ball properly. If your stick's pocket isn't open for an oncoming ball then you won't catch it.

Imagine playing...

... a racing game where you no longer steer with your thumbs. A simple attachment turns your pointer into a fully functional steering wheel. True analog. True precision. If you're racing on water, dip the steering wheel forward to sink into the water. Tip it back to rise.

Nintendo fans have already begun to create mock peripherals for Revolution's remote controller

... a real time strategy game where locating, gathering, and ordering troops is as easy as pointing, circling, and pressing a button. Better yet, all commands are issued with hand and arm gestures. Pump your fist and emphatically point outward to have your army charge. Signal your hand back and forth to have them patrol an area. A fixed hand in front of you halts your soldiers.

... a first person shooter game where aiming your shot is as intuitive as it sounds. Turning is a breeze also. If your "gun" is detected off screen, your character continues to turn in that direction (and speed at which it left) until you aim back on the TV. You must holster your weapon at your side to reload. Point the remote at your opposite shoulder to wield your knife. Pull out that rocket launcher resting on your back by performing that very action in real life.

This glorified Light Gun would work wonders for shooters

... a fighting game where you customize the movements of your attacks and dodges. Swift wrist movements in any direction control your punches. Hold the controller on its side and swift wrist movements in any direction become different kicks. Create your own custom combos and learn to dish them out at a devastating pace. Holding the B trigger blocks but will do you no good unless you physically direct your pointer to guard an oncoming attack.

... a flight combat game. A peripheral that easily resembles a flight stick protrudes from the base of the pointer. Lean into turns, incline above the clouds, and nose dive directly toward enemy tanks. Buttons on the top and side of the stick (which of course allow you to fire machine guns, drop bombs, eject, etc.) are effortlessly managed with your thumb and fingers.

Flight games on Revolution are inevitable
