SSB Tournament Match #6: Link vs. Fox

It's almost a shame that this match pitted Link and Fox together, because they're arguably the two best fighters in Super Smash Brothers and both would likely make it to the finals if they'd been paired up against different opponents in this round. But hey, if one of them is getting knocked out of the tournament this round, they're going to get kicked out all out. Whatever that means. I think I was implying that this is one of the fiercer matches we've had so far, because it was. And in the spirit of kicking it up a notch, Link ditches the elf rags for a bold Goron Tunic and Fox dons his green outfit and red boots. Nothing says action like red boots.

3...2...1...GO!

In true Western style, the two fighters raced to draw their weapons and get off the first shot. It turned out Fox was the quicker hand, and as Link pulled back to sling out his boomerang, Fox stunned him with a quick blaster shot. Fox took the opportunity to split into a low smash attack, but Link rolled safely around the move and then rolled again to land himself right behind Fox. Fox tried to keep up by rolling right to get around Link, but Link was ready with a low cut smash attack that sent Fox to the ground. But they were just testing the waters at this point.

Fox hopped back to his feet just as Link walked up to take a hack at him, and he made a quick sprint of two steps and and hit Link with a sliding kick. Link was barely jarred by the attack and quickly turned the tables by rolling around behind Fox and then jumping, thrusting his sword upward to drive Fox into the air. While in the air Fox made advantage of his aerial prowess by tossing Link upwards with a juggle-kick. Then Fox returned to the ground for a moment and leapt back up to juggle-kick Link once again. When Fox air-hopped back up for a third go at it, Link was ready and spun around for a double roundhouse kick that sent Fox to the ground. Once both heroes had landed, Fox, with his back to the sloped side of the castle, unholstered his blaster and took aim at the Hylian. Fox rained out shot after shot at Link, who gradually inched closer and closer to the mercenary while shielding half the shots and catching the other half in the chest. Eventually he found a window of opportunity, dropped his shield, and jumped over Fox and the line of fire with a spin attack. Fox quickly put his blaster away and slipped into a bicycle kick that barely hit Link, but was enough to knock him to the ground on the sloped roof. Link pulled himself up to his feet trying to shake off the 83% he'd gained. Fox, sitting safely on 42%, jumped down to the sloped roof to catch Link off guard.

Fox displayed some impressive acrobatics by performing his juggle-kick just a second before he hit the ground. Link face-planted onto the roof with Fox behind him to the left, and so he tried to gain an edge in the fight by rolling to his feet behind Fox. Unfortunately for Link, Fox caught him off guard by activating his reflector and zapping Link just as he was getting on his feet. The shock left him slightly off the side of the level. When Link made the slight jump necessary to get himself back, however, Fox once again was one step ahead of him and flipped into a high smash attack that catapulted Link straight into the air and completely off the level. Fox, still only 42% into his first life, taunted the fallen elf. That snotty little bastard.

Link came back strong, but still struggled to find a match for Fox's speed. In his initial fall from his regeneration platform, Link soared down to the left to swipe away in the air with his sword at Fox, but Fox jumped right over Link with grace and ease. Link's no slowpoke, though, and the second he hit the ground he pulled a quick about-face and chucked out his boomerang. Still, Fox was too on top of things to let a move like that take him down and just rolled around it. And even when it looked as if the boomerang might hit him from behind on its return trip, he put up his reflector shield and deflected it off into the distance harmlessly. It looked as if Link wouldn't be able to lay a hand on the lithe mercenary.

Think again! Stupid! Fox's reflector renders him invulnerable to most things that fly through the air, but the Hero of Time is not one of those things! While Fox was busy reflecting the boomerang, for only a split second, Link took the opportunity and pounced through the air to drop down sword-first on the defenseless Fox. Fox picked himself up from where he'd fallen on the slope and apparently had enough of the defensive game that until now had been working pretty well. e jumped back to the middle of the level and dashed to where Link was standing. This time Link looked like the one in control of the match, because he stood his ground waiting for Fox to get close and then the second he was in range, Link whipped him into the air with his high triple-swipe smash attack and then while Fox was incapacitated in the air he leapt up and followed through with a spin attack.

Fox wasn't about to give up so easily, though, and didn't even allow himself to hit the ground, air-jumping back to where Link was still falling from his spin attack and juggling him up into the air. Link tried to take advantage of the situation by coming down with a sword thrust, but Fox was back on the ground and shielding just in time. Instead of countering, Fox opted to roll leftward to get behind Link, but Link cashed in on the opportunity and whirled into another spin attack to catch Fox off guard before he could do anything about it. Fox was on the sloped ground with 99% in danger of losing the momentum of the match, as Link pursued him at 27%.

Link ran across the roof of the castle over to Fox's resting place on the sloped left edge, and when he reached the end of the even ground he slid into a stabbing motion that might have caught Fox in the forehead. But rather than even shield the attack, Fox met with his own smash bicycle kick, and the two attacks deflected each other. Then Link jumped over to meet Fox on the lower ground, and Fox tried to catch Link in the air, where he seemed to have the advantage. Fox spun himself over for a juggle-kick, but just as quickly Link brought his sword down and put all his weight behind it. Link suffered a slight disorientation and 2 points of damage, but Fox was blown over to the far left, too far for him to make it back to the level. Link was 29% into his second life, but he was that much closer to taking back the match.

Link made his way back from the sloped left side of the castle to the middle, where it was safer for a white guy who can't jump. Fox fell from the resurrection platform right in front of him and they started the next round of the match, much as they started the first round. Almost as if it was choreographed, both combatants rolled backwards to get some breathing room and then at the same time they launched into their long-range attacks just like before. Once again, Fox scored the first hit with his blaster, but this time he wasn't quick enough to entirely stop Link from throwing his boomerang, and it hit Fox square in the face to knock him off his feet. Link then jumped up into the air to get the drop on the stunned Fox, but Fox was back on his feet and into the air to catch him off guard with an air juggle that sent Link over to the higher level of the high tower. Before Link could get to his feet, Fox had already caught up with him from below and juggle-kicked him again, then waited for his descent so that he could hit him with a high kick while standing on the middle platform. Link tried to answer with his downward sword thrust, but Fox dodged left around it and slid into a low split smash attack that brought Link to 81% and drove him to the ground near the awning on the right of the level.

Link chucked a boomerang out there just to keep Fox at a distance and then jumped to the tower in the middle of the level. Fox swept down through the air and caught him before he could reach the platform, juggle kicking him into the air and then comboing into a back kick just for good measure and a few points extra damage. Fox landed to the right of the tower and from out of nowhere Link landed right on his head with a downward sword thrust. Back on his feet, Fox left behind the whirly acrobatics for a bit and relied on his trusty blaster. He barraged Link with non-stop blaster fire, but Link was able to keep his shield working the whole time. Fox tried to get a jump on Link by quickly dropping the blaster assault and jumping through the air over to him, but Link quickly dropped his shield and jumped into the air to meet Fox by stabbing his sword high into the air. Fox countered with a downward drill kick that brought them both back down to Earth.

Captain Fuzzy dodged around to the left to get behind Link, and when Link copied the move Fox zapped him with his reflection technique. Link jumped back and they shuffled back and forth trying to gain a tactical advantage over the other. Finally, when Fox hopped behind Link, Link had had enough and simply turned around and ran towards Fox, giving him a quick stab. He then caught Fox as he was off his feet with a whirling spin attack to bring on the pain. When Fox hit the ground he immediately turned the tables with a high kick, hitting the Hylian adventurer while he was still in the air, and then followed it up with a juggle kick. Fox air-jumped for another juggle, but Link had recovered and brought his sword down onto Fox to send him off to the left at 68%, with Link at a very dangerous 163%.
