SSB Tournament Match #5: Ness vs. Kirby

Kirby and Ness. Ness and Kirby. Brains meets... well, not brains. Stomach? Hmm... There must be some correlation between these two... aha! Dot eyes! Neither of them have whites in their eyes! Good enough? Whatever, that's what we're going with.

And thus began the Dot-Eye Battle for Dreamland! Ness rode a meteor down to Dreamland, while Kirby joined the battle by taking a ride on a shooting star... wait...

And thus began the Battle of Falling Stars! Very fantastical sounding, I like it! Okay, so Ness blazed down to the ground in the middle of the stage in true meteorite fashion, and Kirby's Super Star dropped him off on the left platform of Dreamland.

3...2...1...GO!

Kirby made a pre-emptive final cutter attack before he even moved from his perch, but regardless of the attack, Ness jumped over to the left platform and shoved Kirby right out of the air before he could bring down his sword, and then added a quick aerial kick to the pink puffball. But just as soon as the sword attack was cut short by Ness, Kirby had drawn his blue blade again and sliced the wonderboy upward in a second, even-more-final cutter attack. With damage still so low, Ness recovered quickly while still in the air and head-slammed Kirby into the air. Kirby tumbled to the top platform with Ness landing in the grass right below him. The opening volley of the battle behind them, Kirby and Ness prepared to re-engage, at 41% and 8%, respectively.

Ness lifted himself through telekinesis up towards the top platform and tried to strike a quick easy kick on Kirby, but Kirby dodged backwards around the attack and then smash-kicked Ness in the back. A large item crate appeared on the top platform to the right of where Kirby stood and Ness floated, and Kirby ran into Ness to knock him away and then picked up the crate. Ness was back again before Kirby could toss the load, and gave him an open-fisted aerial hit, which has to be one of the most awkward-looking moves in the game. But I never play with Ness, so he can be as awkward and dorky as he wants to be when he's controlled by the computer, no skin off my back.

Anyway, about the crate that Ness broke open with his gimp-palm hit, it had a mine inside it that came popping out and landed on the top platform, inactivated. Kirby jumped over to get the mine, but Ness tripped him up with an upward yo-yo twirl, and then he picked up the mine and chucked it overhead with just the right timing to bean Kirby pretty squarely with it. Ness then jumped over Kirby's yet-to-gain-control body above he left platform and tried to burn the little guy with a PK fire bolt, but just in time to save his bacon, Kirby regained his senses and twisted himself into a swan-dive formation to send a backward kick into Ness' face. Very graceful looking, especially when compared to Ness' host of uncoordinated jabs and kicks. Ness was knocked clean off the left side of the stage, and though he had plenty of time to levitate himself back to safe ground, Kirby was waiting for him on the edge and grabbed him by the collar the second he was within his grasp. He rocketed to the sky and then just as quickly dove back to the ground to piledrive the heck out of Ness. Then, while Ness recovered his senses from the attack, Kirby strolled over to the land below the middle platform where an item capsule lay, and threw it up into the air.

Ness made it back to the level at 64% damage, still in the seat of power over Kirby, who had 80% damage and didn't even need to be as heavily-beaten to knock off the stage. So Ness fell down from Kirby's previous toss and caught Kirby unawares on the left platform. He put full force into a downward leg slam that sent Kirby into the ground and then bouncing back up into the air. Just then, panic of urgency set it for both fighters, as a Maxim Tomato had just appeared on the top platform just to the right of the now-active mine! They both made their way for it, but Kirby, thanks to Ness' attack that sent him trampolining into the air, was right above the item when it appeared and dropped down right on top of it. Just as it seemed Kirby was about to pick it up and bask in the health-recharging goodness, Ness jumped up from both behind and underneath him and stomped Kirby on the head. Kirby had snatched up the recovery item, but he still felt the brunt of the kick at a full 110%, and he went straight up into the air like a shot pinball. Then Ness, with his momentum moving him even after his kick, found himself unable to stop before he hit the proximity mine, and it blasted him clear into the edge for the KO.

But Kirby survived! Somehow, he barely edged it out and instead of sailing into the background, he drifted slowly back down to the stage, and what with the Tomato's health effects, he was now at only 10% damage! Ness would have quite a lot of catching up to do in this match.

Ness returned to the match, one life the fewer, and his chucks brought down the slamma on Kirby again to start off the second round. Kirby tried to counter with a drilling kick, but Ness was still untouchable thus far, and so Kirby simply kicked through him and fell off the top platform, onto the ground. Kirby grabbed an item capsule off the ground and threw it up to the top platform where it hit Ness from below, revealing a Pokéball. Kirby jumped up to knock Ness away in order to get the item, and spun into a flying cartwheel. Ness swung his leg low to match the attack, and both collided and flew off to opposite sides of the level. Kirby flew to the right at 40% damage and Ness was tossed to the left at 28%.

Kirby's flight proved faster than Ness' telekinesis, and he made it back to the top platform before the brainiac could. Kirby picked up the Pokéball and threw it to the ground to release a Hitmonlee, just as a Maxim Tomato materialized on the ground in the middle of the stage. Ness, having failed to reach the top platform first in the race to the Pokéball, found himself in a much better position to get it than Kirby. In fact, he was right next to it. He took two steps and was nearly within grabbing range when the Hitmonlee that Kirby had summoned flung himself into a high jump kick and scored a direct hit on Wonderboy. Ness flew end-over-end into the air and Kirby casually dipped from the top platform to the ground and brought his damage percentage down to zero. For those keeping score at home (where else would you be reading this?) that means that Kirby might as well have not been touched this entire game.

Kirby puffed up and took flight to reach Ness mid-air as Ness plummeted back down to the battle. The little marshmallow got himself a slight elevated edge over Ness and squished himself into a stone to drop on Ness' oversized egghead. Ness swayed to the left and Kirby's rock fell harmlessly on the ground to the left of the right platform. Ness landed to his left and tried to catch Kirby in a trap and set a PK Fire on the rock, but Kirby didn't pull out of his solid rock defense and waited out the column of flame. The second it had died down enough to be harmless, Kirby popped out and quickly delivered a backwards air kick to Ness's chest, sending him off the left side of the level. When Ness made it back, Kirby tried to hit him with an item capsule down that broke on the very edge of the level, which contained a Home Run Bat. Kirby then tried to run over to get the bat, but at this point Ness had landed and he grabbed Kirby and psychically threw him back and then grabbed the bat for himself. Ness and Kirby shuffled all over the level dodging each hit the other threw out, but Ness connected first with a low kick, knocking Kirby somewhat out of rhythm. He followed up with a PK fire but Kirby had brought up his shield just in time. Ness then threw the bat he was holding at Kirby, but the little marshmallow skillfully spun around it and let it fly off the level. Just then, as if the gods themselves wanted Ness to lose as much as I did, a third Maxim Tomato appeared just behind Kirby, and with Ness far off to the left, Kirby was once again at 0%. Ness, on the other hand, was already up to 75% on his second life. Eat that, nerd.
