Nintendo's Demo Play Coming to Handhelds

Posted July 7th 2009 by Jordan Mammo.

Just in case you were worried that Wii owners would be the only ones who'd be able to experience the joy of having a videogame play itself, Nintendo is making sure everyone with a DS doesn't feel left out. Japan's Nikkei newspaper reported today that Nintendo's newly-patented Demo Play feature will be making its way into some handheld titles for the DS and DSi, specifically mentioning "high speed action games."

Demo Play is meant to make videogames even more accessible to newcomers by allowing players to skip through parts of games that they find difficult. It is unclear exactly how this feature operates, but presumably players can have a game take control away from themselves and watch as it plays itself through any of the title's scenarios.

Generally, I expect this feature to manifest itself in two ways. Either it's simply going to add on to the increasingly bloated nature of Nintendo's recent work, or it's going to liberate the publisher from its fear that people are complete idiots. Since Demo Play is more than likely only going to be an option that no one ever has to use, I'm hoping that Nintendo will start trusting people a little more and stop telling me what a fucking key is supposed to do every time I pick one up in Zelda.
