Updated: SEGA Announces new Alien VS Predator

Posted February 11th 2009 by Curtis Brunet.

SEGA is bringing back a classic with the announcement that a new entry in the Alien Versus Predator series is on the way.  Developer Rebellion Developments - creators of the original Alien VS Predator and who most recently worked on the Playstation 2 ports of World At War and The Simpsons Game - will be handling the development duties.  The game is set for a tentative 2010 release, but if Colonial Marines is teaching us anything, it's that release dates by SEGA really are more of a basic guideline.  Better to say it will be released before Duke Nukem Forever and leave it at that.  Though no systems were detailed, it is safe to assume we would see an Xbox, Playstation, and PC release.

In the press release, CEO of SEGA West Naoya Tsurumi added that "by adjusting the release date of our other Aliens titles to accomodate it, SEGA will ensure that every title lives up to the high expectations of Aliens and AvP fans".  Wait, is this just their way of announcing that Colonial Marines is delayed again?

Update: Full press release available after the break.

SEGA AND TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX LICENSING & MERCHANDISING ANNOUNCE NEW ALIENS vs. PREDATOR GAME

Signing of Rebellion's Aliens vs. Predator makes for a third Aliens franchise game, which will be the first to launch in series.

SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON (February 11, 2009) – SEGA of America Inc., SEGA Europe Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising (Fox L&M) today reveals exciting new details of their increasing portfolio of upcoming games based on Twentieth Century Fox's Aliens universe.

SEGA will publish an all-new Aliens vs. Predator (working title) game in early 2010. The game is currently in development with independent developer Rebellion, creators of the original 1999 Aliens versus Predator; a legendary title that went on to define an entire generation of multiplayer gaming.

With the opportunity to publish what promises to be a landmark game, SEGA has strategically updated the release of the other upcoming Aliens titles currently in development within its portfolio.

"The innovative new AvP game presents an exciting opportunity for us," says CEO of SEGA West, Naoya Tsurumi, "It represents a fantastic addition to our growing Aliens franchise and the reinvention of one of gaming's most cherished iconic titles. By adjusting the release of our other Aliens titles to accommodate it, SEGA will ensure that every title lives up to the high expectations of Aliens and AvP fans."

"SEGA continues to create masterful games based on our Aliens franchise and this new addition is sure to continue their successful track record," said Gary Rosenfeld, Senior Vice President, New Media for Fox L&M.

SEGA will announce further details of the new Aliens vs. Predator very soon.

I hope not. I've been looking forward to Colonial Marines for a while now. Though a new AvP game would be welcome so long as they keep away from the storyline established in the movies (just make it a sequel to AvP2).

I'm far more interested in this than Colonial Marines, since squad-based games (such as Colonial Marines) usually annoy me more than anything and the fun of an Alien game is alternately being scared by the aliens as a lone marine and then hunting marines as the alien. Oh yeah and the predator fits in there somewhere too.

Assuming it's an FPS, I imagine it'll get a PC release at some point. Even if it's just distributed through Steam.

Good point zig. Actually thinking about it, a new AvP title with a modern graphical engine could be an amazingly underwear-filling experience.
